Caring for Linen

Linen asks for less than most cloth. It grows stronger wet than dry, resists odour, and improves with every wash. The instructions below are short because linen does not need many.

Washing

Machine wash at 40°C on a gentle cycle. Mild detergent. Wash with similar colours. No bleach.

Skip fabric softener. It coats the fibre, closes the weave, and reduces the airflow the waffle structure exists to create.

Drying

Tumble dry on low, or line dry. Remove while slightly damp. Linen finishes drying in the air and sets softer for it. High heat is the only thing that will shorten the life of the cloth.

Ironing and storage

Iron on low only if needed. The wrinkle is permanent. The wrinkle is the point.

Store folded in open air rather than sealed plastic. Linen holds moisture and needs to breathe.

What changes over time

The first wash lifts the waffle and opens the cells. By the fifth, the hand has loosened noticeably. The fibre gains tensile strength as it softens, which is why linen outlives cotton at the same weight. A Monolith washed weekly is expected to outlast the room it was bought for.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature should a linen blanket be washed at?

40°C on a gentle cycle with mild detergent. Higher temperatures shorten the life of the fibre.

Can a linen blanket go in the dryer?

Yes, on low heat. Remove while slightly damp and let it finish in the air.

Why avoid fabric softener on linen?

Softener coats the fibre and closes the weave. It reduces breathability and works against the airflow a waffle structure is built for.

Does linen shrink?

The Monolith is pre-washed, so movement after the first wash is minimal.

How often should a linen blanket be washed?

Every two to four weeks in regular use. Linen resists odour and does not need frequent washing.
